South River Restoration

In the Fall 2010, the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG) was awarded a $74,900 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP) to conduct a fluvial geomorphic and habitat assessment of the South River watershed. This award was the culmination of a process to secure funding to study the South River that began in early 2009. The goal of the project is to work cooperatively with the towns of Conway and Ashfield, various landowners, and regulatory agencies to assess the types and causes of the erosion, channel instability, and habitat degradation and identify and prioritize long-term cost-effective techniques to stabilize the eroding banks and improve aquatic habitat. The project will provide restoration designs in 4 stretches of the river, and a final engineering design for the highest priority site. A project ‘kick-off’ meeting will take place.
